Seth Godin’s Poke the Box: The Next Book
Static is not an acceptable state.
- Seth Godin
Seth Godin quietly mentioned that his latest book, Poke the Box, is available for pre-order. It was only mentioned on The Domino Project’s website, which is the publishing house Godin setup through a partnership with Amazon. I am sure once he mentions it on his regular blog (if he does), we can learn more about the ideas he will be presenting in the book, but here is the gist of it:
Question: What does it mean to Poke the Box?
Seth Godin: Conformity used to be crucial–fitting in, not standing out. Compliance used to be the heart of every successful organization, every successful career. The reason? We all worked for the system, in the factory, doing what we were told. Now, though, compliance is no longer a competitive advantage.
Poke the Box is about the spark that brings things to life. We need to be nudged away from conformity and toward ingenuity, toward answering unknown questions for ourselves. Even if we fail, as I have done many times in my life, we learn what not to do by experience and doing the new.
This isn’t the same thing as taking a risk. In fact, the riskiest thing we can do right now is nothing.
There is a great Q&A on the Amazon page about the book, and the video is also worth listening to.
Poke the Box appears to be the next step after his last book, Linchpin, introduced the idea of people having a lizard brain that restricts their production of art. Poke the Box is about defeating that lizard brain to create art and share it with the world without fear, without concern for failure or for the negative reviews and complaints.
I think that Seth Godin realized that he has been a major influencer on a lot of people’s thoughts, but has had minimal impact on their actions.
This book aims to reverse that trend.
One important, gigantic note about this book: there are only 400 hardcover copies available. First come, first serve. It is being released March 1st, but I am sure all copies will be sold out well before that date arrives.
